Diesel or Gas Motorhome – Which is Best?

There are plenty of choices that you will need to make when purchasing an RV. You will have to decide on the size of your rig, the manufacturer you are going to purchase from, the price that you are comfortable with, and more. Another important choice that you will need to make is whether you are going to purchase a gas or diesel powered motorhome. There are pros and cons to each option, so you will have to weigh the factors and decide which is best for you and your family.

You probably don’t need much introduction to a gas motorhome, as they are the standard that you will typically see out on the highway or filling up the campsites. Gas motorhomes have the engine in the front of the vehicle, and they typically will come in around 8 MPG (depending on model, size, age, etc.). It is safe to think of a gas motorhome as a ‘standard’ motorhome.

So, then, what about diesel motorhomes? They are basically a different animal altogether. They are frequently referred to as ‘diesel pushers’ because the engine is located in the rear of the RV as opposed to the front. There are a number of commonly accepted advantages to owning a diesel RV, including the fact that you can enjoy a quiet ride since the engine is all the way at the back. Also, engine performance in challenging conditions such as going up mountain passes tends to be better in the diesel. Finally, most diesel options will offer slightly better fuel economy than will a gas RV.

Why Pick Gas?

If there are so many great advantages to the diesel motorhomes, why would anyone pick gas in the first place? Cost, for one thing. Diesel RV’s tend to be dramatically more expensive than equivalent RV’s fitted with a gas engine. Beyond the higher price tag at purchase, you will also be likely to incur more maintenance costs as the diesel engine will use far more oil than a gas engine. Depending on gas and diesel prices at the time of purchase, you may or may not be able to save money per gallon with gas. At the moment gas is less expensive than diesel, but that is always subject to change.

The Choice is Yours

Obviously, the choice will be yours in the end as to which motorhome suits your needs. For most people, this choice is going to come down to cost. All things being equal, the diesel option would be a pretty easy selection thanks to its superior performance in the mountains and quieter ride. Of course, all things aren’t equal, because the price tag is going to play a large role in your final selection. Many diesel RV’s will sell for 30% – 40% more than their gas counterparts, meaning you will have to sign a much bigger check if you wish to own a diesel motorhome. Take the time to think the decision through with your family and take a close look at your budget. Diesel is great, but you can have memorable vacations in a gas rig as well. Once you make your selection you can forget all about the shopping process and simply look forward to enjoying your new toy!
