Enjoying an RV Trip in Bad Weather

In a perfect world, the sun would always shine when you pack up the RV to take a vacation with your family. Of course, no one has ever accused this world of being perfect. There is plenty of bad weather to go around, and some of it is likely to roll in right over your head from time to time during an RV vacation. While you would probably prefer the sunshine, you don’t have to let a little rough weather stop you from having a great time on your trip.

Before your next vacation, review the following bad weather RV tips. By making a few easy preparations before you head out, you can increase your odds of enjoying yourself with your family – regardless of what the weather decides to throw your way.

Pack Thoroughly

It should go without saying that you need to be well-prepared for the weather when it comes to packing clothing and other items. Take a look at the weather forecast to guide most of your packing, but bring along at least a couple of foul-weather garments even if the forecast looks good. Weather forecasting is an inexact science, and you don’t want to be caught on a trip in bad weather with only shorts and t-shirts available. Other than clothing, bringing items like tarps and extra towels can help to fight back against rain that may move in.

Create an Outdoor Space

When you first arrive at your destination, work on creating a covered outdoor space that will allow you to get out of the RV even when the weather is bad. Many travelers make the mistake of thinking that they don’t need this kind of space because they already have the RV for shelter if it starts to rain. While it’s true that you can protect yourself from rain in the RV, you don’t want to be cooped up inside all trip long. By putting an outdoor living area in place right from the start of the trip, you will always have a place to get some fresh air even if the rain is falling. Also, even if it doesn’t rain, the covered outdoor space could serve as a shady spot under the sun.

Embrace the Conditions

Don’t spend any time on your trip worrying about the weather – because there is nothing you can do to control it anyway. The weather is going to do what it is going to do, so it is up to you to have a good time regardless. Plan plenty of activities for your trip, and make sure to include some that are enjoyable even in bad weather. There is nothing fun about sitting in the RV looking out the window waiting for blue sky to appear, so plan ahead and embrace the weather conditions while smiling the whole time.

As an RV owner, there is very little chance that you get great weather for each and every vacation that you take in the years ahead. Most likely, you will encounter your fair share of rain, wind, cold, and more. By being prepared, you might find that you have just as much fun on these trips as you do when the weather is great. Be safe out there, and enjoy the RV lifestyle!
