For and Against – Buying a Used RV

The process of buying an RV is very similar to the process that you go through when purchasing a car. Both are large purchases, and you want to make sure you do your homework thoroughly before signing on the dotted line. If you are going to get exactly what you want, for a price that you are happy with, you will need to put serious time and effort into the process.

One of the big decisions that needs to be made is whether you are going to buy a new or used RV. Each has its benefits, and each has drawbacks. There is no right or wrong answer for this question – the choice that you make will have to be based on your budget, your personal preferences, and your plans for the future.

Following are arguments both for and against purchasing a used RV. Use the points below to help guide your own decision making process.

For: Get a Great Deal

Obviously, the number one reason to buy a used RV is to save money. A used rig is not going to be as expensive as a new one, so you can save money right off the bat when getting into the RV’ing world. Assuming you can find a model that has all the features you desire – and is in good condition – buying a used RV can feel like stealing compared to paying full sticker price. You get to have all of the fun that comes along with owning an RV, while writing a smaller check at the same time.

Another advantage of this method is that you can buy RV’s which have been tested for a few years by previous owners. That not only applies to the specific owner that you are buying from, but also to anyone else who has owned the same model. You can use the internet to research the model you are interested in, and you will uncover plenty of information to help you make your choice. If there were any issues with that model year, they will have been discovered by owners who bought new several years back. That way, you can pick a model that has a great reputation, and you should still be able to get a great deal.

Against: The Savings Aren’t Enough

Many people, when they head out RV shopping, discover that the used ‘discount’ isn’t quite as substantial as they expected. In some cases, you will only save a small percentage off of the new price when you decide to purchase a used model. If that is the case, you may decide that buying new is worth the difference in prices. A new model will come with some form of warranty, and it will have no wear and tear on any part of the vehicle. You won’t have to wonder about any previous accidents or incidents because you will be driving it off the lot in brand new condition. Unless the savings are significant, you may be better off simply browsing the new model year editions.

The choice of whether to buy a new or used RV is up to you, obviously. There are good reasons to go in either direction, so the best course of action is to visit some RV dealerships to see what is available. Most likely, after a period of shopping around, the best course of action will quickly become clear.
